WHEN STEVE, A DANCER-TURNED-IMPRESARIO, RETURNS TO HIS NATIVE HUNGARY AFTER A 20-YEAR ABSENCE, HE FINDS MANY THINGS DIFFERENT. THE COMMUNIST REGIME THAT EXPELLED HIM IS GONE, LIFE HAS CHANGED FOR THE BETTER AND HIS FORMER APPARATCHIK FATHER HAD RETIRED IN DISGRACE. BUT HIS BROTHER, GYULA, WHOM HE USED TO IDOLIZE, HASN'T CHANGED ONE BIT. Ko se STEVE, bivši plesalec in zdaj impresarij, odloči zapustiti Montréal, da bi se vrnil k svojim koreninam po 20-letni odsotnosti, spozna, da se je v njegovi Madžarski marsikaj spremenilo. Komunističnega režima, zaradi katerega je moral oditi, ni več. Življenje je boljše. Njegov oče, komunistični aparatčik, je upokojen. Le njegov starejši brat GYULA, ki je bil včasih njegov idol, se ni prav nič spremenil. Še vedno dela v starem plesnem studiu z obubožano plesno skupino, kjer sta brata pravzaprav začela plesati. Poročen je z MARI, v katero je bil tudi STEVE nekoč zaljubljen. Zaradi pomanjkanja subvencij GYULA ne more postaviti nove predstave. Stara zgodba "Deviški ples smrti" postane ozadje in alegorija za vsakodnevne kompromise in opravičila, ki se jih zavedamo. "Neizogibno zlo" , "ples s hudičem na robu britvice" pa postane "Ples smrti", izdajstvo naših principov, nadarjenosti, naših bližnjih in našega bistva. S prikazom bogastva plesa, glasbe in umetnosti je Deviški ples smrti tudi praznovanje novega "plesa" življenja v Vzhodni Evropi.
