THE DOCUMENTARY ENTITLED ‘JANEZ PUHAR’S LOST FORMULA’ INTRODUCES THE SLOVENIAN INVENTOR OF GLASS-PLATE PHOTOGRAPHY FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF A FOREIGN OBSERVER, THAT OF SCOTSMAN ROBIN CRICHTON, WHO WONDERS HOW AND WHY WE HONOUR HIM, SINCE HE IS VIRTUALLY UNKNOWN IN THE WESTERN WORLD. ROBIN DECIDES TO SINGLE-HANDEDLY LOOK INTO THESE SLOVENIAN BELIEFS. PUHAR CLAIMS THAT FOR THE LIGHT-SENSITIVE MATTER HE USED MERCURY, SULFUR, IODINE AND POSSIBLY VARNISH, WHICH HE APPLIED IN THE END TO PROTECT THE EMULSION. BUT HIS REAL FORMULA HAS NEVER BEEN BROUGHT TO LIGHT ANYWHERE. INDEED, THE WHOLE WORLD KNOWS THAT NO ONE HAS USED PUHAR’S INGREDIENTS TO MAKE PHOTOGRAPHS, BECAUSE THE SAID THREE ELEMENTS ARE NOT SENSITIVE TO LIGHT - NEITHER SEPARATELY NOR TOGETHER AS A COMPOUND. Dokumentarni film Izgubljena formula Janeza Puharja govori o našem izumitelju fotografije na steklo z vidika tujega opazovalca, Škota Robina Crichtona, ki se sprašuje, kako in zakaj ga častimo, saj je v zahodnem svetu malodane neznan. Robin se odloči, da bo slovenske trditve raziskal kar sam. Puhar namreč trdi, da je za svetlobno občutljivo tvarino uporabljal živo srebro, žveplo, jod, pa morda še lak, s katerim je na koncu zavaroval emulzijo. A njegova prava formula ni bila nikoli in nikjer obelodanjena. Ves svet pa seveda ve, da še nihče ni uporabil Puharjevih sestavin za izdelavo fotografij, saj niti sami zase niti v skupnih spojinah ti trije elementi niso svetlobno občutljivi. Zato se Robinu porodi ključno vprašanje: so torej štirje Puharjevi originali, ki trenutno obstajajo na svetu, pravi ali samo zmota slovenskih zgodovinarjev in muzealcev?
